STAR ID Required For Domestic Air Travelers By December 2014

star_id400

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – By the end of 2014, federal security authorities like the TSA at airports or guards at federally secured buildings will look for a new type of identification.  It’s a driver’s license called the STAR ID and most of you are going to need one.

STAR stands for “Secure, Trusted, And Reliable.”  According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety’s web site, it’s part of a nationwide effort to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards, which, in turn, will help fight terrorism and reduce fraud.  It came as a result of Congress passing the REAL-ID Act of 2005.

To fly in the domestic U.S. you must have either a STAR ID or a government-issued passport as of December 1, 2014.  This is for anyone born after December 1, 1964.  People born before that date will have until December 1, 2017 to secure their new STAR I.D.

How do you get a STAR ID?  Even though it will replace your driver’s license once you get one, it’s not as simple as renewing it at your county courthouse.  It’s a brand new license, so you’ll have to visit the driver’s license office in your county.  In Huntsville, it’s at the Alabama Department of Public Safety, located at 716 Arcadia Circle NW.  Check this list for office locations in each Alabama county.

To obtain a new STAR license, you must present the following forms:

ONE of the following, to verify identity and date of birth:

-Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
-Original or certified copy of birth certificate
-Consular Report of Birth Abroad
-Certificate of Naturalization issued by Department of Homeland Security
-Certificate of Citizenship issued by DHS

For cases where the current name and the name on the primary identity document are different, you should also bring:
-Court ordered name change document
-Marriage certificate, issued by the courts and/or
-Divorce decree, issued by the courts

For Non-Citizens:
-Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card – I-551 for Lawful Permanent Residents
-Valid Passport for non-immigrants except for asylum applicants and refugees
-Other government issued document showing your full name
-Department of Homeland Security document showing proof of lawful presence
-If your name has changed by marriage/divorce, you must have your name changed on your Citizen and Immigration Services (CIS) documents.

Both Citizens and Non-Citizens will need to bring:
-Your Social Security Card or proof of your Social Security Number
-Two documents that show your principal residence

See this document list for more detailed information.

What’s the goal of the STAR ID?

The new identification is intended to improve security in airports and other federally secured locations.

“When you board an airplane, you can know that everybody is on that plane that should be on that plane, or if you’re entering a federal building you can know that everybody’s there that should be there,” said Alabama State Trooper Curtis Summerville.

The Alabama Department of Public Safety admits they’ve still got work to do making sure everyone who wants the ID gets one.

“We’re going to work on that certainly from our standpoint to make sure people know that you can get that STAR ID,” said Trooper Summerville.

If you don’t have the STAR ID and you miss the December 1, 2014 deadline, you can bring all the documentation with you to the airport.  However, the STAR ID will make things easier for you, Trooper Summerville said.

Harry Reid’s Office Leaks Boehner Office Emails

Harry Reid’s Office Leaks Boehner Office Emails—And It Could Ruin Any Faith You Have in Washington

A series of leaked emails authored by House Speaker John Boehner’s chief of staff Mike Sommers show that the Speaker may have coordinated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to exempt Congress from Obamacare.

The emails were leaked Tuesday by Reid chief of staff David Krone, who actually has a history of this sort of thing.

Reids Office Leaks Boehner Emails

The leaks, which are a major taboo in Washington, show Boehner (R-Ohio) worked behind the scenes earlier this year to address confusion over a provision in the Affordable Care Act that would force members of Congress and their aides into the exchanges. In fact, if one were to go by the leaks, which were first published by Politico, it appears that the offices of Boehner and Reid regularly coordinated to exempt Congress from the health care law.

But given that Boehner is now apparently against congressional Obamacare exemptions, the emails make him look inconsistent and hypocritical – which may have been the point of their leaking.

This “is for [Boehner] & [Reid] to ask the President to carve us out of…Obamacare”

Share:

From Politico:

[B]ehind-the-scenes, Boehner and his aides worked for months with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and others, to save these very same, long-standing [congressional Obamacare] subsidies, according to documents and e-mails provided to POLITICO. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was also aware of these discussions, the documents show.

One email even appears to show that Boehner’s office discussed how it would disguise a planned meeting on the subject with President Barack Obama as a meeting on immigration reform, National Review Online reported.

“We can’t let it get out there that this is for [Boehner] and [Reid] to ask the President to carve us out of the requirement of Obamacare,” Boehner chief of staff Mike Sommers wrote on July 17.

“This is a little bit more difficult because it isn’t a routing meeting because [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi and [Senate Minority Leader Mitch] McConnell won’t be there,” he wrote. “I am even ok if it is the President hauling us down to talk about the next steps on immigration.”

Republicans said the leaked emails completely mischaracterize the speaker’s actions.

A “senior lawmaker” told National Review Online that Boehner was the one who came up with the idea of using the Obamacare Hill exemption as an issue in the House’s budget battle with the Senate and the White House.

“The only memory I have of him talking about this is about how we could screw them with it,” the lawmaker said.

The email leak has obviously complicated the “high-stakes” negotiations between senior Democrat and Republican lawmakers.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before. I don’t know how David thinks anyone on either side of the aisle will ever be able to work with him again. I guess this is part of Harry Reid’s plan: He refuses to talk with Republicans so I guess his chief of staff figures he doesn’t need to be able to do so either,” a GOP aide told National Review Online.

“He’s a low-rent, self-dealing bagman,” another aide said.

Reids Office Leaks Boehner Emails

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., listens to remarks by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as they celebrate the start of the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, during an event with other lawmakers and people whose lives have been impacted by lack of health insurance, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 (AP)

In a statement to National Review Online, Krone defended himself: “Every time one of these anonymous Republican aides takes a look at their paycheck, I hope they remember it was Harry Reid who protected their employer contribution.”

“They and their bosses are welcome to return it if they’re so outraged. I took the action I did because I refuse to stand by and watch those who pressed for this ruling turn around and attack the very thing they asked for, simply because they don’t have the courage to stand up to a few whiners in their caucus. Integrity means owning in public what you advocate for in private,” Krone said.

TheBlaze reported in April that Congress was trying to figure out how to approach the provision of the Affordable Care Act, which was proposed by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) during the 2010 debate over Obamacare, that would force members of Congress and their aides into the law’s health exchanges.

The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein noted: “It’s not clear that the federal government has the authority to pay for congressional staffers on the exchanges, the way it pays for them now in the federal benefits program.”

Oh, that meeting with the president Sommers discussed in an email? It never happened.

The latest news on Congressman Boehner calls to mind earlier allegations that he advised the White House in September on how to win Republican votes for U.S. military action in Syria.

Egyptian AG charges Hillary Clinton for conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood

December 17, 2013

There’s new details emerging about a possible threat to Hillary Clinton‘s presidential run in 2016. The Egyptian Attorney General, Hisham Barakat, alleges that Clinton collaborated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

World Net Daily (WND) reports that Clinton has been named in a criminal complaint with Naglaa Mahmoud, the wife of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, to incite domestic insurrections in Egypt.

The charges say that Clinton and Mahmoud conspired to topple Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He’s the Egyptian general who has been commander in chief of the Egyptian armed forces, and the minister of defense, since Aug. 12, 2012.

Researcher Walid Shoebat reported on his blog that criminal charges have indeed been filed against Clinton and Morsi’s wife. Shoebat speaks fluent Arabic and is a former Palestinian Liberation Organization operative. He says the news of the charges were reported in Arabic, by credible sources, which he translated.

WND says, “Shoebat translated the transcript from an Egyptian Mehwar TV channel news video in which television reporter Nasr Qaffas explains on camera details of an interview Turkey’s Anatolia news agency conducted with Naglaa Mahmoud.”

The transcripts from the Mehwar TV news video is said to include comments by Naglaa Mahmoud which implicate Huma Abedin, the wife of former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner. She was also the former Hillary Clinton chief of staff. According to WND, Abedin has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to Anatolia Press, Mahmoud said,

I have between my fingers, a treasure trove of secrets from the White House and Mrs. Clinton fears my wrath. I will not speak about Huma Abedin.

Mahmoud claims that she and her husband became friends with the Clintons in the 1980s and were recruited by them. (She didn’t clarify what work she and her husband were recruited to do.) According to her Clinton had official and unofficial dealings with Mahmoud. She also said that Hillary sought out the help of the Muslim Sisterhood “in dealing with problems in the Middle East.

Naglaa Mahmoud also claimed Hillary Clinton “is looking for the support of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood,” when she runs for president in 2016. Mahmoud also stated that “Hillary depends on us tremendously to help her succeed in the coming presidential elections, just as we helped Barack Obama win twice.”

According to the WND report, a key revelation in this report is the friendship between the Clintons, Morsi and his wife. Mahmoud is one of 63 leaders of the Muslim Sisterhood and is said to be a colleague of Saleha Abedin, the mother of Huma.

We previously reported on Nov. President Obama had criminal terrorism charges filed against him and his brother Malik. The trial of the Muslim Brotherhood is set to begin in Jan. 2014.

Obama is likely to be a subject in Morsi’s criminal trial. The report alleges that Obama “provided direct financial support to MB political operatives, through the U.S. Embassy, with the full knowledge and complicity of the Morsi government.”

Clinton makes the second highest ranking U.S. official to be indicted for criminal activities involving the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Christianity Examiner Commentary

It would appear in today’s world most of our government leaders are corrupt and dishonest. The government is rife with immorality and people who lack character in their words, actions and deeds. A person in authority has rules to follow and limits, yet this administration seems to break Constitutional law at almost every turn.

We must realize that a person quits being a a “ruler” once they break off from following the rules of law. This causes them to degenerate into tyrants because they don’t recognize the boundaries within the laws. They are always seeking to exploit the law, to see how far they can push the envelope. They do this in order to satisfy their carnal lusts and greed.

In 1643, Pastor Samuel Rutherford wrote Lex, Rex, or the Law and the Prince. In it he commented about the king’s limited power, he said, “God hath given no absolute and unlimited power to a king above the law [of God].

When the magistrate doth anything by violence, and without law, in so far doing against his office he is not a magistrate. Then, say I, that power by which he doth, is not of God. None doth, then, resist the ordinance of God who resist the king in tyrannous acts.

Therefore an unjust king, as unjust, is not that genuine ordinance of God. So we may resist the injustice of the king, and not resist the king. If, then, any castoff the nature of a king, and become habitually a tyrant, in so far he is not from God…. If the office of a tyrant … be contrary to a king’s office, it is not from God, and so neither is the power from God.”

English philosopher John Locke also wrote regarding limited authority: “Wheresoever the authority ceases, the king ceases too, and becomes like other men who have no authority.”

Important Message From a WWII Vet: 90% of Congress ‘Are Traitors to Our Country’

“I feel that our government is trying to break the American people.”
“The most important thing I’ve learned, is to standup for what’s right. If it costs us our life or whatever, if we can’t believe and express ourselves and willing to give ourselves and our lives for what we believe in, then what do we got left? Nothing a total control of us…”
“Germany was taken over because people didn’t take a stand and I see the same thing happening here. We’re all asleep letting our country being taken over by politicians and being destroyed.”

More words of wisdom that could only come from a member of the greatest generation! There is not one thing Mr. Bodeker says that is incorrect in this interview. It still amazes me that we have one generation that did what was necessary to save the world that was followed up by another generation hell-bent on destroying the USA!

As Mr. Bodeker points out he sees what many of us see in the devaluing of the dollar, shipping our industry overseas, and the coming economic collapse which is all by design by those traitors in DC! He maybe up in age but the man knows what he is talking about and to this day 70 years later is still prepared to honor his oath! How many in the military today or retired are prepared to do the same? You took an oath to the Constitution and this country NOT an oath to government or a wannabe dictator drunk with power!

Sad to see our own present day modern military discriminating as to who is and isn’t an enemy to the Republic… I hope old timers like Mr. Bodeker won’t have to set things straight again because of this immature generation!

Summary of Urban Military Training Exercises in 2013

IN THE LONG YEAR 2013: JANUARY
We are spending the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day reviewing 2013.

In January, 2013, we shared Nanette White’s complete list of urban military training exercises.

While the military does have the right to conduct drills anywhere it deems necessary, we had NEVER seen drills to this extent in our major cities so much so that it was alarming to all who saw the major show of force:

COMPREHENSIVE LIST: URBAN MILITARY TRAINING EXERCISES

PLEASE SHARE: ALL LINKS INCLUDED

What do you think about all this? Urban military training exercises, a comprehensive list. Compiled by my friend, Notitia Recolligo. I have used her comprehensive list with her permission, so that you might share with all of your friends.

Americans are not used to seeing the hardware for war in their own cities and neighborhoods, on trains, or on their roads.

**ASK THE NEWS MEDIA WHY NO COVERAGE? http://www.democraticclub-scc.org/National%20News%20Media%20Addresses.pdf

It will take a while, but please try to watch each video, and realize as you watch that the national media appears to be complicit in NOT REPORTING these activities, most are reported by local, and most are CBS affiliates, strangely enough.

If you know of more, please post links in the comments section.

Obama to Top Brass: Will you fire on American Citizens?:
"World-renowned educator and human rights activist Jim Garrow says that the source, man regarded as "one of America's foremost military heroes," told him that President Obama is using a new litmus test for "determining who will stay and who must go" among top-ranked military leaders. Should I Be Storing Food, Water and Firearms?

apocalypse bulletsa

I receive a fair number of videos, emails and articles about the coming financial crash. It is always nigh. It is always imminent. And it always includes buying ammunition.

Here is the fifth piece of advice given by those anticipating a financial and societal breakdown:

5. Store food, water and firearms.

A bug-out bag is a portable kit that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours when evacuating from a disaster. The focus is on evacuation, rather than long-term survival, distinguishing the bug-out bag from a survival kit, a boating or aviation emergency kit, or a fixed-site disaster supplies kit. The kits are also popular in the survivalism subculture.

You certainly need food and water long before you need to stockpile gold .

And there are many scenarios short of the end of the world where food and water would be helpful.

Emergency by Neil Strauss The Disaster Diaries by Sam Sheridan

Perhaps the most interesting part of TEOTWAWKI literature (The End Of The World As We Know It) is its application in other emergency situations.

Every survivalist has a “Bug Out Bag”. Here is Wikipedia’s description of a Bug Out Bag :

A bug-out bag is a portable kit that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours when evacuating from a disaster. The focus is on evacuation, rather than long-term survival, distinguishing the bug-out bag from a survival kit, a boating or aviation emergency kit, or a fixed-site disaster supplies kit. The kits are also popular in the survivalism subculture.Other names for such a bag are a BOB, 72-hour kit, a grab bag, a battle box, a Personal Emergency Relocation Kits (PERK), a go bag or a GOOD bag (Get Out Of Dodge) INCHbag (I’m Never Coming Home).

One of the most useful items we learn from survivalist culture is how often preparing for TEOTWAWKI and having such a bag has helped with lesser emergencies.

But the items are certainly not limited to food, water and firearms. Here is what Wikipedia recommends for your Bug Out Bag :

The suggested contents of a bug-out bag vary, but most of the following are usually included:

  • Enough food and water to last for 72 hours. This includes: Water for washing, drinking and cooking. Canada recommends 2 litres per person per day for drinking plus an additional 2 litres per person per day for cleaning and hygiene.. In addition to 6litres/6kg of water for personal hygiene for 3 days the Canadian government also recommends carrying a portable shower, nail clippers, hairbrush, cosmetics, shaving gear or beard trimmer (if electric then carry a portable generator and petrol), shampoo, deodorant, acne cream, incontinence pads, a dinner suit/gown (you never know what will happen on your adventure, it could be quite exciting, maybe a new romance). Forget trying to walk, you’ll need a car because your survival backpack will be too heavy to carry. Have a nice disaster. New Zealand recommends 3 litres per person per day for drinking. US recommends 1 gallon (3.78 litres) per person per day.
  • Non-perishable food
  • Water purification supplies
  • Cooking supplies
  • A first aid kit
  • Fire starting tool (e.g., matches, ferrocerium rod, lighter, 9volt battery, etc.)
  • A disaster plan including location of emergency centers, rallying points, possible evacuation routes, etc.
  • Professional emergency literature explaining what to do in various types of disaster, studied and understood before the actual disaster but kept for reference
  • Maps and travel information
  • Standard camping equipment, including sanitation supplies
  • Weather appropriate clothing (e.g., poncho, headwear, gloves, etc.)
  • Bedding items such as sleeping bags and blankets
  • Enough medicine to last an extended evacuation period
  • Medical records
  • Pet, child, and elderly care needs
  • Battery or crank-operated radio
  • Lighting (battery or crank operated flashlight, glow sticks)
  • Cash and change, as electronic banking transactions may not be available during the initial period following an emergency or evacuation
  • Positive identification, such as drivers license, state I.D. card, or social security card
  • Birth certificate or passport
  • Fixed-blade and folding knife
  • Duct tape and rope or paracord
  • Plastic tarps for shelter and water collection
  • Wire for binding and animal traps
  • Compass

Some users include the following. These items are appropriate and legal in some areas.

  • Slingshot, pellet gun, blowgun or other small game hunting equipment[verification needed]
  • Firearms and appropriate ammunition

Just to be clear. Firearms are the last item on the list, but they are on the list. There are some terrible people in this world. And you are safer when your trusted neighbors have firearms . But in most disasters, including I suspect TEOTWAWKI, most people you meet will be civil.

Still, a bug out bag is a good idea depending on where you live even if the emergency is just power outages, earthquakes and hurricanes. And with your preparedness you will be equipped to help others who might be in need.

There are many pre-made Bug Out Bags for sale on Amazon.

Here are some organizations providing resources to help you be prepared:

  1. Even the CDC and the Red Cross recommends: (1) Get a Kit (2) Make a Plan and (3) Be Informed.
  2. The American Red Cross makes family preparedness easy.
  3. And the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors National Preparedness Month every September.

Here is a better motto:

5. Be prepared. Especially because it keeps you from being scared.

Be prepared: Wall Street advisor recommends guns, ammo for protection in collapse

Image from Marotta’s website warning investors to prepare a “bug-out” bag in case of a fiscal collapse.

A top financial advisor, worried that Obamacare, the NSA spying scandal and spiraling national debt is increasing the chances for a fiscal and social disaster, is recommending that Americans prepare a “bug-out bag” that includes food, a gun and ammo to help them stay alive.

David John Marotta, a Wall Street expert and financial advisor and Forbes contributor, said in a note to investors, “Firearms are the last item on the list, but they are on the list. There are some terrible people in this world. And you are safer when your trusted neighbors have firearms.”

His memo is part of a series addressing the potential for a “financial apocalypse.” His view, however, is that the problems plaguing the country won’t result in armageddon. “There is the possibility of a precipitous decline, although a long and drawn out malaise is much more likely,” said the Charlottesville, Va.-based president of Marotta Wealth Management.

Marotta said that many clients fear an end-of-the-world scenario. He doesn’t agree with that outcome, but does with much of what has people worried.

“I, along with many other economists, agree with many of the concerns expressed in these dire warnings. The growing debt and deficit spending is a tax on those holding dollars. The devaluation in the U.S. dollar risks the dollar’s status as the reserve currency of the world. Obamacare was the worst legislation in the past 75 years. Socialism is on the rise and the NSA really is abrogating vast portions of the Constitution. I don’t disagree with their concerns,” he wrote.

In his latest note, he said that Americans should have a survival kit to take in case of a financial or natural disaster. It should be filled with items that will help them stay alive for the first 72-hours of a crisis, including firearms.

“A bug-out bag is a good idea depending on where you live even if the emergency is just power outages, earthquakes and hurricanes. And with your preparedness you will be equipped to help others who might be in need,” he wrote. “Be prepared. Especially because it keeps you from being scared.”

He provided a list of items and even a link to bug-out bags on Amazon.

The Project For The New American Century, 9-11 And The So-Called “War On Terror”

PNAC

In a speech at Johns Hopkins University in April 2002, the National Security Advisor, Condoleeza Rice, remarked that “an earthquake of the magnitude of 9/11 can shift the tectonic plates of international politics.”  The US now had to figure out “how… you capitalise on these opportunities”. Two months previously, Dick Cheney had let it slip that that the discovery of a new “great enemy” meant that the US role in the world had at last become “clear.” [1] America’s triumphant ousting of the Taliban was only the beginning. The leader of the free world also vowed to protect us from rogue dictators armed with weapons of mass destruction – especially the evil axis of Iran, Iraq and North Korea. The American overseas military presence expanded quietly but surely to places as diverse as Colombia and Georgia, the Philippines and Djibouti. National Missile Defence was trumpeted as the ultimate protection of the homeland and the doctrine of pre-emption emerged unashamedly. All as a consequence of 9/11, we were told.

However, what most people missed at the time (understandably so, if they got their news from any mainstream media outlet) was that the terrorist attacks provided the Bush Administration with a much sought-after pretext to implement a hawkish pre-existing agenda which had nothing to do with 9/11, but had been expounded in detail and vigorously lobbied for during the Nineties by many prominent members of the current administration as well as several journalists and academics, under the aegis of a then little known but highly influential neo-conservative lobby group named the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). Since its inception in 1997, PNAC has consistently been the most hawkish of the coterie of neo-con think tanks which provide the Bush administration with its intellectual backbone. In its seminal report of 2000, ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century’, the Project observed that its militaristic agenda might prove difficult to implement “absent a catastrophic and catalysing event…a new Pearl Harbor”. [2] 9/11 proved just so and the so-called “war on terrorism” has been the cover for a new projection of American power.

The full scope of the PNAC agenda and its impact on the Bush foreign policy has never been exposed at the time of writing. Its roots lie in the infamous 1992 Defense Planning Guidance report (DPG) written for Dick Cheney, who was then Secretary of Defence. It was supervised by Paul Wolfowitz, then Under Secretary of Defence for Policy, now the Deputy Defence Secretary. The DPG envisioned a world where, fresh from its victory in the Cold War, the United States would turn its ‘unipolar moment’ into a ‘unipolar era’. The leaks to the New York Times revealed that the authors’ “first objective” was to “prevent the emergence of… any hostile power from dominating a region whose resources would, under consolidated control, be sufficient to generate general global power.” Potential competitors should be “discouraged… from challenging our leadership or seeking to overturn the established political and economic order” and “the sense that the world order is ultimately backed by the US” rather than the UN would be decisive. The report met stinging criticism from the press and a rather more benevolent version was drafted and counter leaked by the Pentagon in an attempt to reverse the damage. [3]

There also remained amongst the Republican right a deep-seated resentment that Saddam Hussein had not been finished off during the Gulf War. This was directed particularly at Colin Powell, whose ‘dovish’ tendencies had apparently influenced the then-President Bush to stop short of Baghdad. In fact, when presidential candidate George W Bush announced his man for the State Department in July 2000, Robert Kagan, a director of PNAC, complained that “the problem with Powell is his political and strategic judgement… At this historic juncture (the Gulf War) [it] was dreadful” and not an isolated case, either. [4] Iraq’s vast oil reserves meant it was exactly the kind of country which had the potential to challenge the US as a regional power – as the DPG warned.

If the Republicans had won the 1992 election, the principles of the DPG would, in all likelihood, have formed the core of their new post-Cold War foreign policy. But their plans were spoilt when they were unexpectedly defeated by a draft-dodger from Arkansas who was more interested in the economy than the national security apparatus. So, while Americans relaxed and enjoyed the ‘peace dividend’, the interventionist wing of the Republican party languished, desperate to find a way to overcome the resurgent isolationist faction within the party and put their hawkish ideas back on the agenda in a time of relative peace and prosperity.

neocon-200x178Then, in 1996, the editors of the right-wing Weekly Standard, Robert Kagan and William Kristol (formerly Vice-President Dan Quayle’s chief-of-staff in the first Bush Administration), began to pick up where the DPG had left off and formulate an agenda and a movement for a “neo-Reaganite” foreign policy. In an article in the “prestigious” journal Foreign Affairs in summer 1996, they rediscovered the comforting moral clarity that had seen them through the Cold War, arguing that the US should “champion American exceptionalism” and “refuse to accept limits on American power.” Where once the nation defined itself in the face of the Soviet threat, the new “threat the US faces now and in the future is its own weakness. American hegemony is the only reliable defense against a breakdown of peace and international order.” [5]

The following year the PNAC was established to “make the case and rally support for American global leadership” and to “shape a new century favourable to American principles and interests.” [6] Its Statement of Principles was signed by Elliott Abrams, now Bush’s director for democracy and human rights and senior director for Near East and North African affairs; the president’s brother Jeb Bush, now Governor of Florida; Vice-President Dick Cheney; Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld; his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz; Zalmay Khalilzad, the administration’s special envoy first to Afghanistan and now Iraq and formerly on the Bush National Security Council; Lewis Libby, the national security advisor to Dick Cheney; Peter W Rodman, the assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs and Paula Dobriansky, the under Secretary of State for Global Affairs as well as numerous members of the former Bush and Reagan administrations such as Frank C Iklé, Under Secretary of Defence for Policy under Reagan; Frank Gaffney, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Nuclear Forces under Reagan and Dan Quayle, the Vice-President to Bush Snr. Signatories to subsequent letters and reports by the Project include: Richard Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State; John Bolton, the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security; William Schneider Jr, the chairman of the Defence Science Board in the Pentagon; Robert Zoellick, the US Trade Representative, Richard Perle of the Defence Policy Board, Stephen Cambone, the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Dov Zakheim, Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Defense.

project-new-american-century-members-pnacPNAC championed causes that were anathema to Clinton. Despite his adoption of the Iraq Liberation Act in October 1997 – which had been lobbied for by members of PNAC and which made it official US policy to depose of the Iraqi leader – Clinton’s policy really amounted to keeping Saddam ‘in his box.’ In 1997, the Project moaned that the U.N had “rewarded Saddam” after the collapse of the inspections – propagating the myth that the inspectors were ‘expelled’ rather than withdrawn by the US. [7] Members of Congress were “carping at the use of force” when Saddam needed to removed “with or without Security Council approval.” [8] In January 1998 PNAC sent a letter to the President urging “the removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime.” There was no mention of terrorism or democracy, though, but rather that “the safety of American troops in the region, of our friends and allies like Israel…and a significant portion of the world’s oil supply will all be put at hazard” if the US failed to oust Saddam. Another letter was sent in May to the Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, and the Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott, lobbying for the Iraq Liberation Act. [9] When Paul Wolfowitz testified to the House National Security Committee in September 1998, he even outlined the basics of a plan of attack. [10] Clinton’s lily-livered diplomacy meant that “it is not Saddam who is now in a box, but the United States,” complained Robert Kagan in the Weekly Standard. [11] (Coincidentally, Kagan’s wife, Victoria Nuland, deputy chief-of-staff to Dick Cheney). Moreover, in 2000, the Project underlined its commitment to American preponderance when it argued that even if Saddam “passed from the scene”, the value of US bases throughout the Middle East would endure because they are “an essential element in US security strategy given the long standing interests in the region.” [12]

East Asia was an area with two potential adversaries, North Korea and China. Madeleine Albright was lambasted for her visit to Pyongyang in October 2000. Only regime change could lead to a lasting solution there: “Cold War divisions end when the communist governments that gave rise to them collapse.” [13] And like the Middle East, even Korean unification would not mean the end of the 180 US bases on the Korean peninsula. It would mean “a change in their mission, not the termination of their mission.” [14] China’s increasing military strength was a threat to US leadership in Asia too, and instead of trying to engage with Beijing, Clinton should “stop playing by China’s rules.” [15] Searching for an enemy to fill the void left by communism, they announced that “the Soviet Union is gone and the biggest challenge to American interests in the world today comes from Beijing, not Moscow.” [16]

In the Middle East, they campaigned for a hard line with the Palestinians. Clinton’s willingness to meet with Yasser Arafat amounted to “a policy of appeasement and moral equivocation…It has only helped fuel Palestinian ambitions about statehood.” [17] Instead, the peace process should be rejected and Israel “should be allowed to fight the war [against the Palestinians] by the means it deems necessary, without American carping and with whatever American material and financial support may be required.” [18]

The emphasis on US unilateralism was underscored by the Project’s attitude to the nascent International Criminal Court. The treaty was fatally flawed because “it will inevitably complicate the exercise of American geopolitical leadership.” [19] Similarly, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty was shunned because it would “hamstring American leadership by supporting new disarmament initiatives put forward by the world’s Lilliputians.” [20]

REBUILDING AMERICA'S DEFENSES

The blueprint for this leadership was outlined in PNAC’s 2000 report, ‘REBUILDING AMERICA’S DEFENSES.’ The authors stated explicitly that they saw the report as building upon the Defence Planning Guidance in the hope that it might find a more receptive audience after a decade of living in the post-Cold War world. The core missions for the US military were defined as homeland defence, including the deployment of a National Missile Defence system; retention of sufficient forces to rapidly deploy and win multiple simultaneous large-scale wars (the standard example used was Iraq and North Korea at the same time); the retention of sufficient forces to undertake “constabulary duties” to preserve the peace and the current balance of power, such as continuing the no-fly zones in Iraq and establishing military bases in vital regions; and finally to transform the armed forces by exploiting advanced technology to ensure US dominance of space and cyberspace, “the key to world power in the future.” Of course, this would have to be accompanied by a massive increase in defence spending which in 2000 was less than 3% of GDP. A minimum of 3.5-3.8% was necessary and a small price to pay to “maintain American military pre-eminence [and] secure American geopolitical leadership.” [21]

In the light of which, it is difficult, if not impossible, to accept the administration’s specious claim that it was not until 9/11 that they suddenly realised overnight the virtues of an active foreign policy. The neo-conservative hawks that came to power in January 2001 did so with an agenda that was interventionist from the beginning, and in the first eight months of the Bush presidency, some of these policies were already discernible.

war on terror is a fraudAmerica’s unilateral withdrawal from the ABM treaty had caused worldwide consternation and China, the new “strategic competitor,” took issue with US arms sales to Taiwan. Saddam’s removal had been one of Bush’s campaign pledges. In January 2001 the Defense Policy Board, previously a nondescript and low-key advisory group, was reconstituted by Douglas Feith and Donald Rumsfeld into a high-profile group full of expert neo-conservative ideologues and unabashed hawks on Iraq (such as Richard Perle and Ken Adelman) to work closely with Rumsfeld. [22] Ned Walker, assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East region under Clinton who was held over for a while when Bush entered office, has claimed that at the very first meeting of the National Security team – one day after Bush became president in January 2001 – the first item on the agenda was regime change in Iraq. [23] The following month, funding to the Iraqi National Congress was re-started. There was much discussion about the reform of the UN sanctions on Iraq into ‘smart sanctions’ – coincidentally Dick Cheney had been one of the leading lobbyists for this during his tenure as CEO of Halliburton, the pipeline services vendor, claiming that existing sanctions unfairly penalised business by outlawing private trade in oil with Iraq. [24] (Cheney still receives up to $1million a year in “deferred compensation” payments after his resignation from Halliburton which has since been awarded a government contract worth up to $7 billion to put out oil fires in Iraq).

But it was 9/11 that presented the Project’s many supporters now in government with a crisis conducive to their agenda. While others were sending out messages of shock and condolence, an article in the Washington Post on 11 September by PNAC director Robert Kagan went further, implying that this was the “catastrophic and catalysing event” which could justify a major American power offensive. “We should now immediately begin building up our conventional military forces”, he wrote, and fight the new war “as we have never fought before.” Before the perpetrators of the crime had even been identified, Kagan claimed that “it will become apparent that those organizations could not have operated without the assistance of some governments… with a long record of hostility to the United States.” By immediately linking governments to terrorism Kagan was already – on 11 September – arguing for regime change of governments hostile to the US, not just the capture of the terrorists responsible. Casting his net widely, Kagan stated that the US should immediately declare war against “any nation that may have lent their support” to the attacks – perhaps even Saddam?” [25] (emphasis added).

According to exclusive national security files shown to the Washington Post (and later included in Bob Woodward’s recent book Bush At War) the Bush administration agreed on 12 September that it should pursue a general ‘war on terrorism’ wider than just Afghanistan, and there was general agreement that Iraq would be a target eventually. [26] As PNAC executive director, Gary Schmitt, and deputy director, Tom Donnelly, wrote in the Weekly Standard just 13 days after the attacks and before the bombing of Afghanistan had begun, it was not Osama bin Laden who was the priority, rather “eliminating Saddam is the key… the president has a rare opportunity to deny our enemies their strategic goals in the Middle East and to restore American pre-eminence”. [27]

On 20 September, PNAC sent a letter to the President, this time making a new claim: that “any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.” [28] The signatories advised Bush that “a serious and victorious war on terrorism” would require offensives against Hezbollah, Iran, Syria, the Palestinian Authority as well as “whatever funds for defense are needed”. Gradually the Bush Administration escalated the rhetoric and Iraq was soon named in the “axis of evil” along with the other old foe, North Korea. And conveniently – despite previously being dismissed by US intelligence – forgotten ‘evidence’ about CIA created al-Qaeda‘s supposed links to Baghdad suddenly came to light. [29]

Caspian BasinThe initial phase of the new ‘war’ saw US overseas bases expand rapidly to areas of strategic interest including Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Tajikstan – all close to the energy rich Caspian Basin– and troops were sent into the Philippines, Georgia, Djibouti (which happens to have one of the world’s two most important shipping lanes for oil tankers, the Bab alMandab) and troops were expanded in Colombia (which happens to have an oil pipeline under threat from the FARC guerrillas in Colombia’s civil war). [30]

Bush’s State of the Union address of 2002 also gave new justification to NMD and a huge increase in the defence budget – which will bring it to a level 20% higher than the Cold War average by 2007 – by casting them as necessary measures against terrorism, despite the fact that even this advanced technology could do nothing to stop an asymmetric attack like 9/11. But anyone who dared question was denounced as unpatriotic and even pro-terror. This was a war in which you were either with us or against us.

As the outpouring of international sympathy that followed 9/11 continued to justify and fuel the drive for American hegemony, the Nuclear Posture Review was leaked to the Los Angeles Times in February 2002. [31] It revealed that the Pentagon had begun developing contingency plans for using nuclear weapons, not as retaliation but as a first strike, against seven mainly, though not all, non-nuclear countries including Iraq and North Korea. In June 2002 in a speech at the West Point military academy, the President announced that the US would strike at its enemies “before they emerge.” [32] This was followed by the National Security Strategy which echoed both the DPG and the PNAC report of 2000 in asserting that the US would “dissuade potential adversaries from… surpassing, or equaling, the power of the United States” and that “we will not hesitate to act alone, if necessary, to exercise our right of self-defence by acting pre-emptively.” [33] The strategy was complete with the disturbing revelation that Donald Rumsfeld has proposed the establishment of a covert Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG) [a U.S. intelligence agency that would employ “black world” (black operations) tactics] to provoke terrorist attacks where it deems necessary to which the US can then deliver an ‘appropriate’ response. [34]

A PNAC letter to the president of April 2002 stating its long-held position that that “it can no longer be the policy of the United States… to continue negotiating with Arafat” was followed by Colin Powell giving Ariel Sharon over a week to “immediately” withdraw his forces from Jenin before Powell arrived in Israel for peace talks. Then in June the President made his own ‘Arafat must go’ speech. [35]

Moreover, the administration’s re-newed intent on preserving the Pax Americana has meant its speaking out on issues unrelated to the war on terror. In the run up to the Copenhagen summit on EU enlargement, the US lobbied vigorously for Turkish accession to the Union – cosying up to Ankara is favourite of PNAC due to Turkey’s proximity to the Middle East. [36] The administration also flatly refused to sign up to the International Code Council (ICC) instead attempting to negotiate special exemption agreements and threatening to pull out of UN peacekeeping missions.

This neo-Reaganite foreign policy, as lobbied for by PNAC, explains why Washington was literally bursting at the seams to go to war in Iraq – the administration’s hawks have been waiting decades for the moment to come. When the non-appearance of any WMD began to turn the public against a war, the focus was carefully shifted onto spreading “democracy” as the justification. In late summer 2002, Rumsfeld even established his own ‘intelligence’ unit within the Pentagon to find ‘evidence’ against Iraq and muzzle the CIA whose recent intelligence estimates on Iraqi capabilities did not support the political choices already made. [37] The administration’s public stance that the onus was on Saddam to “avoid war” by disarming peacefully was insidious political sleight-of-language for successful inspections could never have opened up the untold riches that lie beneath Iraq’s soil, the “stupendous source of strategic power and the greatest material prize in world history”, as the State Department put it in 1944. [38]

war on terrorWhile it is not success in Iraq that has bred hubris – that was already there – it has convinced many of the neo-cons that this is their moment, that now is the time that they can finally re-fashion the Middle East according to their own designs. Before the “battle of Iraq” (one of many “battles” in the “War on Terror“) was even through, the justifications for future conflicts were already being laid out. Richard Perle has called for a Syria Liberation Act based on the old Iraq act and Iran has been warned that must stop sponsoring Hezbollah and its links with the Shia in Iraq are viewed with suspicion.

The upshot is that the real causes of 9/11 must not be addressed, for to do so would be to deny the legitimacy of the pre-existing policy preferences being implemented in its name. Under the guise of a ‘war on terror’, the administration is implementing its long-term strategy for an American preponderance of power, as envisioned by PNAC. And if the war on terror is simply an excuse for power projection, then the claim of toppling Saddam for the sake of “democracy” must also be questioned. Moreover, if the rest of the (Arab) world sees the public justifications for regime change in Baghdad as an excuse to mask an entirely different agenda, then Washington is dangerously fanning the flames of anti-Americanism and sowing the seeds of the blowback of the future.

28 The claim that Saddam sponsored terror is noticeably absent from the 1998 letter. See the 2001 letter at www.newamericancentury.org/Bushletter.htm<
29 The State Department’s annual Patterns of Global Terrorism reports have never mentioned a link between Iraq and al-Qaeda. See the section on the Overview of State Sponsored Terrorism in the most recent report at www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/pgtrpt/html/10249pf.htm

Daniel Benjamin, director of counter terrorism at the National Security Council in the late 1990s, oversaw a comprehensive review of Iraq and terrorism. He commented that “we went through every piece of intelligence we could find to see if there was a link [between] Iraq and al-Qaeda… We came to the conclusion… that there was no noteworthy relationship. I know that for a fact. No other issue has been as closely scrutinized as this one.” Cited in Robert Dreyfuss’ excellent summary of the politicisation of intelligence during the war on terror, ‘The Pentagon Muzzles the CIA’, American Prospect, Vol 13 (22), 16 December 2002. 35 See the letter at www.newamericancentury.org/Bushletter-040302.htm That same month, amid allegations of mass killing, Bush demanded that Sharon withdraw his forces immediately from the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Colin Powell was sent on an apparently urgent peace mission to diffuse the crisis but went via Morocco, Spain, Egypt and Jordan, taking an incredible eight days to get to Israel and giving Sharon enough time to get the job done and withdraw his forces from Jenin before Powell arrived.
36 In a 1997 article, Zalmay Khalilzad observed that “Turkish military facilities provide an excellent location for projecting power to both the Gulf and the Caspian basin. Much of the world’s energy resources are within 1,000 miles of [the US military base at] Incirlik.” See ‘Why the West Needs Turkey’, Wall Street Journal, 22 December 1997.

37 Under the guidance of Rumsfeld, the CIA has begun to produce ‘hypothesis driven analyses’ to incorporate what Rumsfeld terms “the unknown unknowns”. See the Jeffrey Goldberg’s outstanding ‘The Unknown’, The New Yorker, 10 February 2003, available at www.newyorker.com/printable/?fact/030210fa_fact On the lack of justification in the most recent CIA reports before the switch to Rumsfeld’s approach, see Scott Lucas and Maria Ryan, ‘The Manufacture of Fear: 9-11, Intelligence and the “axis of evil”‘ available at www.nthposition.com/politics_lucas_ryan.htm

38 In May 2001, the US National Energy Report of 2001was released. The commission, chaired by Dick Cheney, recommended that the President “make energy security a priority of our trade and foreign policy.” See the final chapter on “Strengthening Global Alliances” at www.whitehouse.gov/energy/Chapter8.pdf

By November 2002 the leader of the Iraqi National Congress, Ahmed Chalabi, had already met with executives of three US oil multinationals to discuss the carve up of oil reserves post-Saddam. See, for example, ‘Carve up of oil riches begins’, Observer, 3 November 2002.

One Rifle to rule them all

Texas Son posted on December 22, 2012 11:30 Article Rating
There are a lot of things that factor into what rifle you would want if you are facing any type of disaster scenario. From the short term situations such as Katrina and Sandy that can last weeks to months and you can walk out of the disaster area, to regional disasters which you can not escape such as the Indonesia tsunami that make your very existence depend on your survival skills… to a global apocalypse scenario. Whether that is zombies, EMP’s that knock out global power, to a meteor that sends us back to the beginning. While a lot of people love the fantasy of having a gun for every situation they come across. The reality is you will likely have to adjust your thinking to plan for a best “one gun fits all” situation the way our forefathers did when they had a rifle and if really lucky a pistol.

You are going to be carrying this on your back, and all the ammunition you can keep with you as well as any accessories to keep that gun operating. This is where KISS logic is very much in play as well as your personal skill and confidence for operating the firearm you use. Something to consider for any out there willing to turn themselves into a pack mule so they can have a rifle for this, a shotgun for that, a handgun for this, and maybe another rifle and oh how about another back up handgun. Go for it.  I am sure you will make a looter very happy when they stumble on your dead corpse after you have died from thirst because you did not have enough space for something to treat or carry enough water with you.

I am going to rank these guns based on the confidence level you have to have to survive with it. From the gun that requires little confidence and skill because it is easiest to use effectively. To the gun that you need utmost professional skill and total knowledge to make work for you. No doubt this is going to piss people off, and by all means debate in comments.  It goes with out saying that if you try to reach for a gun beyond your level of skill and confidence you are absolutely going to have your butt handed to you on a silver platter.
Number One:

The AK-47
This should be the obvious one for anyone who has ever had a seat at a debate on why these guns are the best thing since sliced bread.
Pro’s: They run forever, low maintenance is required, so easy a monkey can use it.  You can bury it in mud and sand rinse or shake it clear and rock and roll. Anything hit center mass in 300 yards is going to be dropped and it has a lot of stopping power, enough to chew through concrete cinder blocks like paper.
Cons: You are most likely going to be a target for everyone who wants one of these in such a situation so strap on your bullseye, Rambo. Another drawback is the weight and space ammunition and magazines will
take up, making you sacrifice space that could kill you. On the other hand you just made yourself a one man army.

Number Two
Remington 870/Mossberg 500 12 gauge
Pro’s:  You have the advantage of carrying different types of loads, from rifled slugs which will give you effective range out to a hundred yards, to bird shot if you need it for small game. This gun is absolute carnage at short range with the correct loads for defense purposes and is a nightmare to confront in close quarters. You also have a decided intimidation factor on your side, whether you simply rack the slide, or let someone stare down the gaping maw of oblivion you will absolutely earn respect from anyone facing you.
Cons: The big draw back is the weight. These guns are not lightweights and their ammunition will drag you down and take up a lot more space than anything else you could pick from. About the most you can load is 10 rounds with tube extensions, and your rate of fire is going to be about one round per second. The weight and space of ammo will seriously limit you on how much you can carry. Also you are limited by affective range stopping power to about 100 yards with rifled slugs.

Number Three
The AR-15/M16
Knock everything you think you know about the AR out of your head unless you are an AR nut and follow the advancements religiously as some do. Between adding a piston drive and changing calibers out you have something that can easily run and gun with an AK, only you have so many more options than an AK does. If this is your tool, chances are you are a psychotically devoted nut to your gun and you are aware of all the tools and toys you can add on this bad boy. Depending on what round you are set for makes it hard to gauge what cons
you are going to have, but starting with the .223 argument. There is a great myth that the .223 was made for wounding targets. If that was true in Vietnam it is totally not true today. The affective range on a 223 can reach out to 500 meters and as any ak47 freak should grudgingly admit, the AR wins on accuracy. The biggest reasons why our troops are mounted with AR/m16’s in 223 is being able to carry more ammo into the fight and having less weight on their shoulders. Additionally these guns are no longer the plastic toys your granddaddy sneered at telling you how delicate they are. If you think an AR cant handle the torture you would go through like an AK, think again. A brother who runs the https://www.facebook.com/vuurwapen page did a torture test of an AR on Youtube. He ran ammo through it til till the furniture caught on fire, cooled it off by dropping it in a mud puddle a couple of times and kept going with it some more.
Pro’s: more accessory and option combinations than you can shake a stick at and list here. Accuracy, range, firepower, the AR has the capability of bringing everything to the game to defend yourself and put meat on the grill for you as well as make sure you have a chance at saving space for other survival needs besides ammo and magazines.
Cons: Like the AK-47, run with this and strap a bullseye to your butt. You got something everyone wants; You better
be ready to fight to keep it.

Number Four
Lever Action 30/30
whether it’s a marlin or a Winchester this is a gun you want if you want to keep a low profile. You can drop just about anything you shoot at within 200 yards. This gun ranks higher on confidence level because chances are your daddy handed it to you when you were learning to shoot and you have lived with it your whole life and know this gun inside and out better than your own underwear. In either event, you are planning on avoiding a fight and don’t want to carry a weapon that will make you an automatic target for anyone with an eye for something flashy. After all, its just a lever action right?
Pro’s: you are less likely to be a target, the 30/30 round is a proven round to get the job done for anything you use it on.
Cons: While this gun compares a lot with the shotgun in terms of capacity, the main difference is affective range and a slightly faster rate of fire. This is a gun that you use sparingly and every shot you make has to count.

Number Five
The Ruger 10/22
I know I just made some people go “What?!” That’s ok, I will do it again in a minute. Remember I am ranking based on skill and confidence. It is obviously going to take a higher skill and confidence level to pick this gun over the others because it is a .22 However, a .22 is enough to kill a man or drop a deer if you know what you are doing. Just don’t go after grizzlies with it or you will get swatted into the last century.
Pro’s: ammo ammo ammo. The 10/22 is nearly as easy to accessorize as the AR and has the benefit of having magazines which can range up to 100 round capacity. You can carry around thousands of rounds of .22 where someone can only carry a couple hundred rounds for their AR or AK. So grab you a couple of banana mags and cases of .22’s and start shooting on Sunday and keep going all week, month, year long.
Cons: It’s a .22, you better be a good shot or whatever you hit is not going to be on your table or if you used it to try to defend yourself with and missed a vital organ you better double, triple and double your triple shots and hope its enough.

Top gun
The Flintlock muzzleloader.
The only time you will ever see someone carrying one of these is because he wants you to see him. You have two options if you have a brain. Run for your life, or figure out why he is allowing you to continue living and be totally cooperative. Option C for the brainless, you try to fight and chances are your scalp or your ears will be this man’s newest trophy. Where you are struggling to survive in a hell on earth. This guy is thriving. Chances are he doesn’t even have a heavy pack. This is a person who ranks at the top of the food pyramid, he has nothing of value to you therefore fighting him is a no win proposition.
Pro’s: arguable that there are any unless you know how to make your own gunpowder and make your own shot. The best reasons for carrying a flintlock is that it makes you someone who has little of value to another person to fight over.
Cons: too many to list unless you know exactly what you are doing. Your have the gun with the slowest rate of fire. Every shot must always hit its mark for you and if you ever get into a fight where you are out numbered you can easily be overwhelmed.
