We keep hearing about preppers and being ready for something, but honestly, go back 100 years and it was very common to have a larder and food for months. During the summer months, mom was always busy canning fruit, veges and more. So take a word of advice…you may have the convenience of a grocery store, but do you know with certainty what’s in the can? Also, should a disaster hit, most stores only have stock for 3 days of activity…a run on the market makes everyone vulnerable.
You can supplement as you see fit, but here’s a good start on a large tub that would feed 2 for 30 days (easily) and it’s all reasonably healthy.
I avoid Mountain House as they prepare the food in advance and mix it with other things (GMO is a whole other topic). Staying as close to just the whole food as possible will keep you healthy longer.
Add dried vitamins (think Emergen-C packs) and spices/condiments, will make this whole system work really well. Also if you look around, you’ll find treats like Freeze dried strawberry yogurt…yum. All of this can be had from Ebay again.
Also, I do know how to store cheese for up to and beyond 10 years without a need for refrigeration…simple, effective and easy. Just have to get the goodies to do it…I can discuss this in a future post, but adding a great food like cheese, in small quantities can make bugging out a bit more palatable…
