Just because the assault weapons ban was defeated, and we can all keep buying our forend grips and PMags for now, doesn’t mean that the anti-gun lobby has given up on its fight. In fact they’re making even more outlandish claims than before. Take Nancy Pelosi, for example, who proclaimed:

“In Congress, there can be no more fitting memorial to the lives lost in Aurora, in Newtown, and across the country than a concerted effort to enact commonsense gun safety legislation. We must uphold our oath to ‘protect and defend’ the constitution and all Americans by expanding background checks and keeping dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands. We must restore confidence in the safety of our homes, schools, movie theaters, and neighborhoods by taking clear, concrete steps to prevent gun violence.

There’s that rhetoric of “commonsense” gun control, as if it’s “commonsense” to limit law abiding citizens from defensive weapons and training while criminals continue to do what they have always done. Pelosi’s press release came on the anniversary of the tragic Aurora shootings, ignoring the fact that a father of one of the Aurora shooting victims has already spoken out against gun control:

“We need to abolish the defenseless victim zones,” […] “I’m tired of explaining to him [my son] why his girlfriend was shot and he could not defend himself — a God-given right.” – Guy Bennett, father of Aurora Massacre Victim

Eric Pratt, the director of communications for the Gun Owners Of America, points out the hypocrisy of Pelosi’s war on guns:

“I wonder which country’s constitution she is referring to, because ours clearly makes no allowances for gun control,”

He’s right, of course. The second amendment to the constitution Pelosi claims to want to uphold guarantees against any such restrictions on the right to bear arms.

“If Pelosi really wants to apply the lessons from Aurora, Colorado in order to save lives,” Pratt said, “she will work to repeal gun laws that discourage good people from carrying firearms.”

It seems like Pratt and Bennett are on the same page, so where is Pelosi coming from? We may never know, but below is the text of the oth she took when she swore into office as a congresswoman just before the 113th congress:

“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. [So help me God.]”
